The librarian intervenes with Kevin’s parents to convince them to let him go to a poetry reading. His brother’s band begins using his lyrics. The librarian tries to understand and help him, the first adult in the story to do so. As part of Kevin’s punishment, he must help out in the library. When he returns to school, he loses his notebook, and another boy finds it and hands out copies of his poems around the school, which is torture for Kevin, who cannot retaliate for fear of being expelled. He is eventually suspended for bullying the other kids. Kevin’s desire to create poetry exists outside the text of the story, as he tears pages from library books and defaces them, posting them in his school to mock teachers. Money is tight, and his brother Petey bullies him. Kevin’s relationship with his family is strained. This novel in verse features the poetry of a bully, which alone makes the reader take a second look because it’s unexpected. Rhyme schemer. San Francisco, CA : Chronicle Books.
